Réunion is a volcanic island in the Indian Ocean, French since the 1600s and Creole in its kitchen. Sweet potato is a common ingredient, and gâteau patate (sweet potato cake) is a staple Sunday bake for many families.

Our recipe is a family recipe. One day we realised, it was the only dessert that was perfectly compatible with the demands of our sport. The cleanest source of carb with steamed sweet potato baked with eggs, vanilla, a little gluten-free flour, baked just enough.

We bake smaller portion than the traditional recipe which is meant to serve your whole Sunday table. We optimise the recipe to meet every day athletes needs from endurance sports to casual hiking.

What did not change: no shortcuts, no preservatives, the same vanilla these islands have used for generations. A cake keeps ten days at room temperature and takes heat, cold and a full day of bouncing without falling apart.

La Diagonale des Fous (the Madmen's Diagonal) is a ultra race! It runs roughly 170 km across the Réunion island, coast to coast over the volcano, with about 9,500 metres of climbing. It is the island's race.

Cakes from this recipe have been carried at aid stations along the route. Thirty hours in, when gels stop working, a slice of something a runner grew up eating still goes down. That is the whole idea.
